Welcome to Ms. Carlson's Dramatic Arts Class!  I am a professional actress, director, and artistic director that has taken the leap into teaching!  This class will focus on building confidence and strong presentation skills.  Your student will participate in activities that teach them tricks on how to focus, utilize their right and left brain, memorization, improvisation, building an ensemble, working through stage fright, and building confidence.



Participation 50%

Students will receive a bi-weekly active participation grade (5 points daily/25 points weekly).  Participation can be earned through positive daily behavior and interaction with classmates.  It can also be earned by positively participating in class activities.


Projects and Assignments 50%

Students will demonstrate their knowledge on three projects per trimester. Each assignment will be out of 50 points.  For more information see the project list.


Project 1 – Theatre History

Students, with their group, will be responsible for researching a topic given to them on Theatre History.  They will each create and present at least one slide of information on their topic receive positive and constructive feedback on their presentation so that we can identify specific weaknesses that they can improve throughout the trimester. They will be graded on their collaboration as a group, the content of their presentation, their verbal presentation skills, their non-verbal presentation skills, and their participation.


Project 2 – Monologues or Scenes

Each student will choose to perform a monologue or scene with a partner.  They will receive feedback on their introduction, characterization, objectives and tactics, vocal qualities, memorization, physicality, energy and emotion, tempo and rhythm, and their ability to focus while performing.    


Project 3 – Play Writing & Performance

Their final project will be a group project where each group will work together in writing a play on a topic that will cross-collaborate with what they are currently learning in either history or language arts.  The students will be responsible for writing the play, acting, blocking, and all technical aspects of their show.  The students will have the choice of performing in the show or being part of the technical team that designs the sets, costumes, and sound.  All students will have a group collaboration and participation grade.  They will also have an individual grade which will be based on their performance and the improvement that they have during the trimester.  They will also be graded on all aspects listed under Project 1 and Project 2.
