Motsenbocker

Middle School (6-8) P. E.

Happy Spring MB! The middle school PE team of Coach Hand and Coach Hanchett are extremely excited to be finishing the academic year here at Motsenbocker.  As the weather warms up so too will the fun and excitement in the gym.  We have been busy this week completing our pre-assessments.  We will be offering a PE field trip to Ninja Nation this trimester to a select group of middle schoolers based on this data. And of course, we will be ending the trimester with our world-famous Field Day festivities!  So come one, come all and let's get stronger and faster, while having a blast playing our favorite team sports!

2/26/24-3/1/24-Pre-Assessments-Both Classes

Pacer, Push-Up, Plank, Sit-n-Reach, and Jump Rope tests.

3/4/24-3/8/24-Pickleball (Hanchett) and Soccer (Hand)

Students in Middle School PE are starting to play pickleball. Pickleball is a paddleball sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. The sport shares features of other racquet sports: the dimensions and layout of a badminton court and a net and rules somewhat similar to tennis, with several modifications. Pickleball was invented in the mid 1960s, and is currently the fastest growing sport in America.  This unit includes a short quiz on the main rules and gameplay that make pickleball unique.

Students in Middle School PE are starting to play soccer, the most popular team sport on the planet! Students will spend the first few days working on soccer dribbling, passing, shooting, etc. Students will also learn about field spacing and gameplay rules. The last few days of the unit will focus on small group gameplay, teamwork, and sportsmanship.  This unit includes a short quiz on the main rules and gameplay students need to know to participate properly.

3/11/24-4/12/24-Basketball and Volleyball

It is my favorite time of year in sports, March Madness!  What better way to celebrate than to start our Basketball Unit.  Middle school has the entire gym for the next month so we will switch between basketball and volleyball.  Students will develop fundamental skills including dribbling, passing, and shooting.  They will not only become familiar with the rules of the game, but also offensive and defensive strategies.  Students will participate in full-speed scrimmages and be quizzed on their knowledge of general basketball rules, gameplay, and fundamentals.

Volleyball is a great Spring unit that students will participate in until after Spring Break. Students will receive instruction and practice time for bumps, sets, spikes/tips, and serving. They will also learn the general rules and serving rotation. Effective teamwork, sportsmanship, and communication are also a focus. This unit will culminate with students demonstrating their development during full speed scrimmages.

4/15/24-5/3/24-Handball and Soccer

Handball-We are reaching the beginning of the end can you believe it! What better way to wrap up the year in Mr. Hand's class by playing Handball.  Popular in Eastern Europe, Handball is an Olympic sport that helps students develop throwing, catching, spatial recognition, teamwork, creativity, good sportsmanship, and agility.  This annually is one of our most popular units for student-athletes of all backgrounds and experience levels.

Soccer-Students in Middle School PE are playing two weeks of soccer. Students will spend the first few days working on soccer dribbling, passing, shooting, etc. Students will also learn about field spacing and game play rules. The last few days of the unit will focus on small group gameplay, teamwork, and sportsmanship.  This unit includes a short quiz on the main rules and gameplay students need to know to participate properly.
